Supported DNS Records and DNS Record Types

The Domain Name System (DNS) is composed of several DNS record types, called resource records (RR). DNSimple supports a wide range of these types, from traditional and most common records to newer types introduced to provide innovative services like DNS Certification Authority Authorization.
DNS Record Types
The standard DNS record types supported:
- A (type 1)
- AAAA (type 28)
- CAA (type 257)
- CNAME (type 5)
- HINFO (type 13)
- HTTPS (type 65)
- MX (type 15)
- NAPTR (type 35)
- NS (type 2)
- PTR (type 12)
- SRV (type 33)
- SSHFP (type 44)
- SVCB (type 64)
- TLSA (type 52)
- TXT (type 16)
We support the following proprietary DNS record types:
Other record types are used behind the scenes to provide core DNS features:
- SOA (type 6) and the zone’s NS records: Automatically created when you add a domain. See What Are System Records?.
- DNSKEY (type 48): Automatically published when you enable DNSSEC. The matching DS record (type 43) lives in the parent zone, at the registry, not in your zone.
DNS Records
Some DNS records have their own semantics but are defined using existing record types. These include:
- SPF (a TXT record). DNSimple no longer supports the separate SPF record type (type 99); see Set Up SPF Records.
- DKIM (a TXT record, or a CNAME to your provider’s key)
-
DMARC (a TXT record at
_dmarc)
Limitations
Integrated DNS Providers each support a different set of record types, and a sync leaves out the types the destination does not support:
- Azure DNS does not support HINFO, NAPTR, SSHFP, SVCB, or HTTPS records. See Azure DNS supported record types.
- Amazon Route 53 does not support HINFO or NAPTR records. See Route 53 supported record types.
- CoreDNS serves every record type DNSimple supports, and answers ALIAS, POOL, and URL records as standard records. See CoreDNS supported record types.
