This reference lists the prerequisites, supported features, and record types for using CoreDNS as an Integrated DNS Provider. CoreDNS runs in your own network and serves zones that you manage in DNSimple. For a step-by-step setup, see Use CoreDNS as an Integrated DNS Provider.

Prerequisites

Supported features

  • One-way sync from DNSimple: CoreDNS loads each zone from DNSimple when it starts, and again on its refresh interval (1 minute by default). Manage the records in DNSimple; changes made on the CoreDNS server are not sent back.
  • Sync status in DNSimple: each CoreDNS cluster reports the records it has loaded under its cluster identifier. The domain’s card shows CoreDNS as , and the Record Editor labels records with the cluster identifier.
  • Add and delete zones: add a DNSimple zone to CoreDNS, or delete its CoreDNS configuration.

CoreDNS does not import zones into DNSimple, and you do not sync it from the Record Editor. Records from another Integrated DNS Provider reach CoreDNS only after they are synced into the DNSimple zone.

Supported record types

CoreDNS serves every record type DNSimple supports, including CAA, HINFO, NAPTR, PTR, SSHFP, SVCB, HTTPS, and TLSA records. Three DNSimple record types are converted into standard DNS records:

  • ALIAS records are resolved when they are queried, using the server’s DNS resolver or the one set with custom_dns_resolver, and answered as A and AAAA records.
  • POOL records are answered as a CNAME record to one of the pool’s values.
  • URL records are answered as A and AAAA records that point to the DNSimple redirector.
