Table of Contents
This reference lists the prerequisites, supported features, and record types for connecting Amazon Route 53 as an Integrated DNS Provider. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see Use Route 53 as an Integrated DNS Provider.
Prerequisites
To connect Route 53, you need:
- An AWS access key for an IAM user that can manage public hosted zones, with these permissions:
route53:ListHostedZonesroute53:ListHostedZonesByNameroute53:CreateHostedZoneroute53:DeleteHostedZoneroute53:ListResourceRecordSetsroute53:ChangeResourceRecordSets
- Full Access to the DNSimple account
These are the only Route 53 actions DNSimple uses.
Supported features
- Import integrated zones: when you connect Route 53, you choose which hosted zones to import into DNSimple. They appear on the Domain Names page.
- Add, remove, and delete zones: add a DNSimple zone to Route 53, remove an integrated zone from DNSimple while keeping it at Route 53, or delete the zone at Route 53.
- Manage records: add, update, and delete Route 53 records from the DNSimple Record Editor.
- Two-way sync: sync records from Route 53 to DNSimple, or from DNSimple to Route 53.
Supported record types
These record types can be managed and synced between DNSimple and Route 53:
Records of other types stay at their provider when you sync. For example, a sync from Route 53 to DNSimple leaves your DNSimple ALIAS records as they are.
Note
URL records are a DNSimple record type with no Route 53 equivalent. At Route 53, a URL record is written as an A record that points to the DNSimple redirector.
