Email Forwarding for Multiple Domains

Email forwarding in DNSimple works per domain. You set it up on each domain separately, each domain costs $2 per month, and each domain has its own plan limits for email forwards and messages. There is no account-wide setting that turns on email forwarding for several domains at once.

How billing and limits work across domains

  • Billing: email forwarding costs $2 per domain per month. Five domains with email forwards cost $10 per month. Charges for a domain stop when you delete all of its email forwards.
  • Limits: your plan’s limits apply to each domain separately. On Solo, for example, each domain can have up to 10 email forwards and 1,000 forwarded messages per month. Unused forwards or messages on one domain do not carry over to another.

See Email Forwarding Limits and Quotas for the limits on each plan.

Set up email forwarding on several domains

Each domain must use DNSimple’s name servers and have an active DNS zone. For each domain:

  1. Open the domain, and click .
  2. Click , and create the domain’s first email forward. This turns on email forwarding for the domain and changes its MX records. See How to Set Up Email Forwarding.
  3. Add the rest of the domain’s email forwards.

You can also create email forwards from the dashboard: click , choose , and pick the domain in the list. The list includes only domains that resolve with DNSimple. See How to Add and Remove Email Forwards.

Set up many domains with the API

The DNSimple web interface has no bulk setup for email forwarding. To create email forwards on many domains, use the email forwards API.

Forward several domains to one inbox

To receive the email for several domains in one inbox, create a catch-all forward on each domain, each pointing to the same destination address. A catch-all forward receives email sent to any address at the domain that has no email forward of its own.

If you only need a few addresses, create the same addresses on each domain instead, such as hello@domain1.com and hello@domain2.com, forwarded to the same destination.

Either way, the To address of each message shows which domain it was sent to. Each domain is still billed separately.

Keep track of email forwarding across domains

  • Use domain labels to group the domains that use email forwarding.
  • Keep a list of each domain’s email forwards and their destinations.
  • Delete email forwards you no longer need. On a domain where you delete them all, billing for email forwarding stops.

Troubleshoot one domain that is not forwarding

If email forwarding works on some domains but not others, check the domain that is not working:

  1. Open the domain, and click . If the tab shows a warning about MX records, follow its instructions.
  2. Check that the domain uses DNSimple’s name servers and has an active DNS zone.
  3. Look up the domain’s MX records with dig +short example.com MX, and compare them with a domain that works.
  4. Check whether the domain has reached its monthly message limit.

See Email Forwarding Not Working for each check in detail.
