Delegate a Domain from Another Registrar to DNSimple
Last updated
Table of Contents
To use DNSimple DNS for a domain registered at another registrar, change the domain’s name servers at that registrar to the four DNSimple name servers. You make this change at your current registrar, not in DNSimple. For a hub that covers both registration cases, see Pointing a Domain to DNSimple. For the full name server documentation index, see Name Server Management at DNSimple.
Pointing the name servers to DNSimple makes the domain resolve using the DNS records configured in your DNSimple account.
Update name servers at your registrar
Before you change delegation, make sure the domain is in your DNSimple account and its DNS zone is active, with the records you need. Otherwise, the domain stops resolving as soon as resolvers see the new delegation.
Change the name servers to DNSimple
- Log in to your registrar account.
- Find the place in your registrar account where you can set custom name servers for the domain.
-
Enter the DNSimple name servers:
- ns1.dnsimple-edge.com
- ns2.dnsimple-edge.net
- ns3.dnsimple-edge.io
- ns4.dnsimple-edge.org
Name server propagation
Resolvers keep using the old name servers until their cached delegation expires. For .COM and .NET, the registry’s delegation TTL is 48 hours, so the change can take up to 48 hours to reach every resolver. A WHOIS lookup shows whether the registry already has the new name servers: see Check name server list in the WHOIS response. For why delays happen, see How DNS Caching and TTL Affect DNS Changes.
